6 Steps to Consider When Finishing a Basement

Here are 6 general steps to consider on how to finish your basement

  1. Clean out your basement

You heard that right. Cleaning your basement is the first thing you should do in order to start with a clean slate. No I am not talking about simply dusting your area, but actually figuring out what you like to keep and organize versus throw out. This does not only allow you to free up some space but also help you visual how you want this renovated space to serve you.

  1. Plan

Figure out how you would like your space to look along with the purpose in mind. Some of which may include a bar, play room, theatre, living room, rental property etc. All of which can dictate the way you may plan to renovate such as the number of rooms and how much space you want for each.

  1. Moisture

Have you ever been down in a basement but can’t seem to pinpoint the musty smell? Chances are you’ve experienced moisture issues that may come from several issues. Some of which can be the lawn you have due to the slope. Interior issues such as drying your clothes, humidifiers etc. Seasonal weathers especially in our dry winters and humid summers. All of which may affect the quality of your renovation. Moisture should be addressed and fall under safe levels to avoid any mold issues. Mold can be extremely dangerous to your family and animals. In some cases mold can be a slowly increasing issue to your health that you may not have expected.

  1. Tools

You may purchase or rent your tools from your nearest hardware store. Some you may want to purchase for future projects! Here are a list of tools to consider

  • Measuring tape (of course)
  • Hammer
  • Stepladder
  • Drill
  • Circular saw

  • Utility knife

  1. Materials

Quite a lot of the cost does go into the material themselves. There are more than one way to renovate a basement and materials being one of the deciding factors on looks and longevity. Some things to consider when building is the:

  • Insulation
  • Drywall
  • Frames
  • Flooring
  • Doors
  • Plywood
  • Shims
  • Caulk or expanding foam fillers
  1. Electrician

Not everyone is well versed in electrical work. Therefore, hiring an electrician will really help you figure out your renovations. Think about the rooms you want and electrical outlets you may need to make it easier for yourself in the future. The overall lighting of your basement and providing a general plan to your electrician will make their job easier by ensuring the safety of everyone. In some cases, you may need them for the initial build and near the end when you’re about to wrap up.
